Jobs provide a unique opportunity to showcase strengths, build independence, and contribute to society while gaining structure, purpose, and financial security. However, in the US, 34% of neurodivergent individuals have had trouble with the recruitment and hiring process, according to a TextHelp survey. This leads to unemployment rates as high as 30 – 40% for neurodiverse adults, 8 times higher than the average. This is where FCSN’s Coordinated Career Pathways (CCP) program comes into play.
FCSN’s CCP program was created to address a need. FCSN saw that many young adults with developmental disabilities who finished school were eager to work, but weren’t sure of how to take that next step. There was often a large gap between education and employment, one that left people feeling uncertain or stuck.
Similar to FCSN’s Supported Employment Program, the FCSN program aims to help FCSN clients achieve employment that aligns with their interests, needs, and career goals. However, the CCP program targets individuals who are within two years of exiting high school or secondary education, or individuals who have recently graduated. Entering the program, the client will work with a team that can include their family, Regional Center Service Coordinators, Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) counselors, and local employers. A person-centered career plan (PCCP) will be developed in alignment with the client’s interest, needs, strengths, and career goals.
Based on this PCCP, the client receives personalized job preparation and training, ensuring their readiness for employment. The team supports and teaches them skills such as building a resume, conducting an interview, developing job-specific skills, and gaining hands-on experience. Then, the team assists in the job search process, connecting with inclusive employers and advocating for accommodations, ensuring that the client is paired with a job that fits their abilities and interests.
Even after job placement, CCP’s support doesn’t end there. Clients will continue to receive intensive job coaching, helping them become familiar and confident with their job tasks and responsibilities. CCP services are time-limited to 18 months initially, however may be extended to 24 months based on needs and progress.
The CCP program doesn’t just prepare FCSN clients for employment- it empowers them to envision a future where their contributions are valued and their potential is fully realized. By bridging the gap between education and the workforce, the CCP program helps these young adults transition with confidence, clarity, and a strong support system. By involving families, service coordinators, counselors, and employers, FCSN’s CCP creates a network of support that reinforces the client’s journey and endeavors. This approach ensures that clients are not only placed in jobs but also well-equipped to thrive in them.
As society continues to recognize the importance of including neurodiversity in the workplace, programs like CCP are leading the way in leading this transition in creating equitable opportunities. Through personalized planning, skill-building, and ongoing coaching, CCP helps clients find jobs that align with their strengths and aspirations. By fostering independence and inclusivity, CCP not only changes lives- it helps build a more diverse and compassionate workforce, shaping the future to be a lot more bright.
