FCSN’s Very First Scholarship Fund of 2021

This year, FCSN decided to award a scholarship fund of $5,000 each to three youth volunteers, who have given their all to FCSN and the entire special needs community. Three Lynbrook High Students Donate $5000 to FCSN Over The Summer

Senior Angela Jiao, co-founder and president of SVSY; junior Andrew Yuan, co-founder and vice president; and senior Raymond Shao, the Director of Curriculum, along with several other instructors, garnered the donation money through tuition fees for their virtual science lessons held over the summer of 2021. They hope that the money from the donation will enable FCSN to provide a more extensive array of materials for their science department, such as computers or chemistry kits. Through this greater availability of resources, they hope that special needs students can more thoroughly explore STEM subjects and discover their interests. Nutrition in My Life: FCSN Class Aims to Empower Students to Make Healthy Choices

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) living in the US are 40% more likely than neurotypical children to become overweight or obese. Because of oversensitivity to certain textures and tastes of food, those with ASD also tend to be picky eaters. After learning about these nutrition-related health challenges that individuals with autism face, FCSN volunteer Rachel Huynh realized a dire need for special-needs students to build healthy lifestyle habits. As a nutrition major at Brown University, she decided to design a nutrition curriculum for students with special needs. FCSN Youth Volunteer Natalie Hsia was teaching arts at South Bay Family Gathering but had to move her lessons online after the pandemic began.
