“Volunteers are the heartbeat of FCSN.” Director of Volunteer Support Linmei Chiao’s quote describes the goal of the FCSN Volunteer Recognition Day held on June 21st: to honor and recognize the volunteers who work for the organization. From tutors to journalists, FCSN’s volunteer base is composed of countless talented and dedicated individuals who make the organization’s mission of helping special needs individuals possible.
The event opened with remarks from FCSN’s founding members, including Linmei, CK, Jim, and Peter, as they reflected on FCSN’s almost 30-year history. As Linmei describes, volunteering has always been “an opportunity to stay connected with FCSNโฆ to make a difference in the community,” and a way for the community to stick together through tough periods and challenges. This sentiment was also shared through video presentations by Isabella He, John, and Melinda Wong, who recounted their own volunteer experiences. Through their speeches, they demonstrated how everyone can contribute to the special needs community in their own unique way. After this introduction, the audience gathered to honor all the volunteers who won awards for their contributions to the organization this year.
Starting with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, an award honoring volunteers for the hours they have spent helping with the organization, 46 recipients were recognized for achieving milestones.
Next, the Outstanding Volunteer awards recognized individuals who exemplify exceptional dedication beyond typical volunteer duties. From 30 nominations, 18 recipients were selected, including both individuals and one outstanding team. These volunteers were recognized for their service and also for their initiative in pitching new innovative ideas, as well as taking leadership roles in different FCSN programs.
The highest individual award, “Volunteer of the Year,” was given to Hannah Gong. A recent college graduate with a psychology background, Hannah has been an incredibly important part of FCSN’s after school programs and has volunteered her free time across multiple initiatives, including the drama camp, kung fu classes, gala, and Family Day events.
The final awards handed out were FCSNโs scholarship, a program designed to give back to the volunteer community, was handed out to four volunteers: Amanda Hsu, Amanda Lou, Rachel Lee, and Melinda Wong. Then, the recognition day concluded with rock paper scissors tournaments and pizza and snacks. This spirit of community bonding and family perfectly represents FCSNโs volunteer culture.
The event can be encapsulated in a quote from Co-Chairman CK Lee.
“You’re not just volunteers, you’re part of a legacy.”
