One of our most anticipated summer camps is the Music Camp, where campers come together to rehearse and practice several songs over 3 days, and put on a performance on the final day of camp. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) living in the US are 40% more likely than neurotypical children to become overweight or obese. Because of oversensitivity to certain textures and tastes of food, those with ASD also tend to be picky eaters. After learning about these nutrition-related health challenges that individuals with autism face, FCSN volunteer Rachel Huynh realized a dire need for special-needs students to build healthy lifestyle habits. As a nutrition major at Brown University, she decided to design a nutrition curriculum for students with special needs. Members of FCSN LIFE Client Council have done a lot during this term, planning for 10 parties, numerous new class ideas, and one community outreach activity. They started to learn how to work with each other and stimulated each other with new ideas to work closely together. They had achieved a tacit understanding when an idea formed, and each of them jumped right in and picked up their share of duties to make the idea came true. East Bay Adult Day Program’s Client Council started in June 2020. Clients meet weekly to share their ideas, discuss their needs, and set goals. They have proposed new classes and activities, made plans for upcoming holiday celebrations and parties, and discussed possible vocation training opportunities.
