On a sunlit afternoon, vibrant energy among FCSN families filled the air with joy and warmth. Laughter, chatters, and smiles were all around, accompanied by music playing in the background by FCSNβs talented musicians. Amidst this lively atmosphere, FCSN presented its 2nd art exhibition in 2023 following its first exhibition β Through Our Eyes β at the South Bay Center. The exhibition ran from 10 AM to 4 PM everyday from August 25 to September 1. The grand opening night of August 25th was a special event, with guest speakers, refreshments prepared by Friendsβ Coffee & Tea, and great turnouts with 183 guests, 50+ dedicated staff, and volunteers. The artworks comprised over 201 pieces contributed by 61 artists and 6 groups who attend FCSNβs Adult Day Programs, After School Program, Living Services, Supported Employment Program, Tailored Day Services, Local Program, and Enrichment Program. The involvement under all these FCSN programs underscores FCSNβs dedication to fostering creative art and ensuring artβs inclusivity among special needs students.

This yearβs exhibition theme was Color Beyond the Line, derived from the idea of transcending conventional boundaries. Just as lines in art arenβt merely confines but pathways to understanding and interpretation, FCSNβs artists demonstrate that life, too, shouldnβt be limited by typical lines of communication or ability. And so, many FCSN individuals, who might face challenges in verbal expression, find solace and a voice through art. β[Art] is a way for them to get to talk to others. The art shows it all,β said Vivian Chung, the South Bay Program Director.Β
In this exhibition, one of the featured artists was Jacinto βJinkoβ Cruz. Jinko demonstrates his versatility by capturing the essence of urban landscapes, architecture, pop culture, and human portraits, in both grayscale and vivid colors. Jinko often finds his inspiration in everyday scenes, taking pictures of them first and then translating them into artworks on paper. His recent trip to Denmark with his family also sparked his love for trying new forms of art, such as Lego sculptures.

The collective artwork, Fantasyland, illustrates a harmonious scene of animals, flowers, butterflies, and colors. The vibrant colors reflect the vitality and diversity of life, transcending conventional boundaries – both literally and metaphorically. The Mandala artwork, made with dots, patterns, and colors, demonstrates the skill and creativity of FCSN artists. These artworks are some of the many beautiful pieces in the exhibition that showcase the studentsβ talents.

The exceptional quality of these artworks left a lasting impression on many guests. The artists were delighted by the warm embrace and recognition extended to them by distinguished guests, supporters, parents, peers, and staff. Their parents, equally proud of their children’s accomplishments, shared in the excitement. Witnessing the remarkable work of all artists ignited a sense of eagerness and motivation to embark on new artistic projects for the exhibition next year.
The success of FCSNβs 2nd art exhibition of 2023 was the culmination of the relentless efforts of FCSN artists, as well as the unwavering support of their parents and dedicated art teachers who provide adaptive tools and materials that incorporate hands-on learning, adaptive technologies, and creative approaches. The exhibition also reflected FCSNβs vision to help the students discover, develop, display their skills, break discrimination barriers, and foster belonging and empathy within community members. Vivian expressed her hope that βpeople will recognize that these special needs kids do have their special talents, and that their talents will turn into a job someday.β The exhibition was not only a showcase of art, but also a reminder of the potential and value of special needs individuals and illustrated artβs power to bring people together, transcend boundaries, and foster a stronger sense of community.
