For more than a decade, the Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN) has used its annual talent showcase to highlight the strengths, creativity, and spirit of its community. What began as a small gathering meant to give children and adults with special needs a place to express themselves has grown into a major yearly celebration that families look forward to. This year, the tradition continued with the 12th Annual Talent Showcase, held on Saturday, April 11, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in the theatre. The venue was filled with excitement as performers, families, volunteers, and supporters gathered to celebrate another year of hard work and artistic growth. The showcase featured a wide mix of performances, from singing and dancing to musical numbers and creative acts. Each performer brought their own personality to the stage, and the audience responded with constant cheers and encouragement. The atmosphere felt warm and connected, reminding everyone why this event has become such an important part of the FCSN community.

Guiding much of the purpose and impact behind the event was Anna Wang, who serves as Event Chair and current Vice President of Friends of Children with Special Needs. As the showcase has grown over the years, Wang has played a key role in shaping its direction and ensuring that performers feel supported both on and off the stage. She noted the added significance of hosting the event during April, Autism Awareness Month, highlighting its role in bringing recognition to the talents and abilities within the community. Reflecting on what makes the showcase especially meaningful, Wang shared that her favorite part is that “it’s a great platform to showcase talent and an opportunity for performers to share their abilities with a wider community.” Her words reflect the core of the event, where confidence is built, talents are celebrated, and meaningful opportunities continue to grow for every participant.

Building on this foundation of encouragement and celebration, this year’s panel of judges brought together individuals with experience in music, education, media, and the arts, each offering a distinct perspective on performance and expression. The judges included Natasha Kung, an accomplished soprano and music educator with extensive operatic and academic training; Monica Kraft, a longtime instrumental music director who led award-winning ensembles across the Bay Area and internationally; Mimi Kwan, an Emmy Award–winning producer focused on community storytelling and outreach; and Jasmine Yang, a classically trained violinist and nonprofit leader dedicated to connecting communities through music. Together, they shared that they were most excited to see the creativity, energy, and individuality each performer brought to the stage, along with the joy and confidence expressed throughout the showcase. They also emphasized how meaningful it was to witness the wide range of talent and the dedication behind each performance. As judge Jasmine reflected, “We are most excited to see the creativity, the smiles, and the different acts that each performer brings to the stage.” Her perspective captured the heart of the showcase, where performance becomes a celebration of expression, growth, and community.

This year’s showcase also featured a full program of introductions, honorable mentions, finalist performances, and special appearances that highlighted the range of talent within the FCSN community. The evening began with a series of Honorable Mention performances that set an encouraging tone for the night. Bowen Duan performed “The Flight of the Bumblebee” on piano with remarkable speed and control. Rad Science, performed by Radley Ferguson, amazed the audience with a lively dry ice experiment titled “Weird Science.” Vocalist Liam-Vaughn McPherson brought warmth to the stage with “For the First Time in Forever” from Frozen, while Ian Wong impressed the crowd with a rhythmic beatboxing performance of “APT.” Frank Prenot delivered a cheerful rendition of “ABC,” and the Queen Bees Dance Crew energized the room with a performance of “Dancing Queen.” Neel Dhingra shared a refined piano performance of “Piano Sonata No. 10 in C Major, K.330,” rounding out the Honorable Mentions with artistry and poise.

After the openings and introductions, the spotlight turned to the Finalist Performances, where each act demonstrated both dedication and growth. Pianist Yihe Li performed “Mephisto Waltz No. 1,” delivering a dramatic and challenging piece with confidence. Chanita Thamthatpimol played the Thai dulcimer in “At My Worst” by Pink Sweat, offering a unique and expressive interpretation. Vocalist and pianist Kevin Shi shared his original piece “The Light You Are,” displaying both creativity and musical skill. Safari Beat Crew brought enthusiasm with a lively percussion performance of “The Bare Necessities,” and Christian Magoon performed “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You” with a warm and heartfelt vocal delivery. Kabir Sharma showcased impressive speed cubing skills, solving multiple cubes with focus and precision. Brighton Pierce performed a dance routine to “Fearless,” sharing both confidence and joy. Clarissa Kowalski amazed the audience with a contortion piece set to “Paparazzi,” displaying technique and flexibility developed through years of training. Levi performed “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana with strong vocals, and the duo Key and Bow shared an emotional piano and cello performance of “A Thousand Years.” Pianist Simon Gaitsgory played “Nocturne in C Sharp Minor,” offering a calm and reflective moment in the program. Harmonic Heartbeats presented “Memories of Pachelbel,” combining choral voices with instrumental ensemble. Kirrishea Parico performed a dynamic dance routine, Genre Hoppers delivered a creative group performance, Duology shared a musical collaboration, and Sticky Keys closed the finalist list with an energetic act.

As the final notes faded and the last performers left the stage, the audience rose in a long round of applause that captured the spirit of the entire evening. The 12th Annual Talent Showcase was not only a celebration of skill. It was a celebration of courage, commitment, and community. Each performer brought something meaningful to the stage, and the support in the room showed how deeply their efforts were valued. With every dance step, song, experiment, or musical piece, the showcase reminded everyone why events like this matter. They create a place where individuals can grow, express themselves, and be recognized for their hard work. As families, volunteers, and supporters left the theatre, they carried with them a sense of pride and connection that will continue to inspire the FCSN community throughout the year. The success of this showcase marks another strong chapter in a tradition that continues to uplift, unite, and shine a light on the talents of every performer who steps onto the stage.
